Why Does This Attention Training Work?

This attention training exercise is the most challenging of the four games available to you for free. Similar to the game “Which Way Does the Arrow Point,” this exercise trains you to focus your attention on a specific task while inhibiting other sensory inputs. In “Which Way Does the Arrow Point,” only movement and direction need to be excluded, but in this exercise, it involves words, which are much harder to inhibit or ignore. This difficulty arises because humans have a natural tendency to mentally “comment” on everything we perceive.

This exercise also incorporates speed processing, as the distracting words require constant mental checks to remind us of what we should be focusing on.

In the Combo game, an additional element is introduced. Here, you train the ability to shift focus or attention from one task to another. This is the most effective method for enhancing your capacity to control attention.

Overall, this exercise trains multiple cognitive abilities: the ability to inhibit unwanted impulses, to increase the speed of information processing in the brain, and finally, the ability to shift attention effectively.
